Khushi at Anth Tak 35

Anthtak 35 was a very different experience from all the other meets. This was one meet which had not only our usual music, masti and food but also a multitude of wishes on a very special occasion- the house warming of our dear Imtiaz, Rekha and Khushi.

 This home has been constructed by this family with such dedication and planning that there is no wonder the house is so marvellous. Plenty of appreciation to Rekha and Imtiaz for having gone into a lot of minute details in designing the house with a lot of aesthetic appeal. 

The grihapravesam religious function was held on the 1^st June with family members and they had arranged for the get together on Saturday, the 2^nd for friends with dinner. There is something extremely heartwarming and touching about their home too, for in the master plan of the house is a special ‘Antthak room’, three cheers to them for this. This is specially dedicated to music so that our enthusiasm and fervour can reverberate in those four walls and this thoughtful gesture is proof of the true love for music and the camaraderie that we share as a family. 

It is this feeling that made Imtiaz plan a music meet amidst the busy schedule of puja, invitations, planning- catering, decorations etc for the occasion and alongside the last minute finishing work in the construction. His wish was that on the first day when the Anthtak family steps into his home, we must have our music session. This is not as easy as it sounds for he had other invitees to attend to and check out that all other arrangements are in order. But here in comes the togetherness of Anthtak. Every member present waited eagerly and if in our normal meets we have gaana phir khaana, here we had khaana and then gaana. As usual, what a spread it was- 

welcome drink of fruit punch, mint shikhanji and starters- spring rolls, corn cutlets and  paneer kababs. For the main course, there was sweet corn soup, tomato basil soup, Tawa fry, Panner kadai, dal makhani, chole, veg biryani, raita, plain rice, rasam, papad, salad, pickle and a noodles counter. For dessert there was fruit salad and gulab jamoon, followed by paan. 

And if any of you are wondering how can one sing after such a heavy meal, Anthtak has the spirit. Manak ji started the programme with ‘Na jhatko zulf se paani’ and then the fever caught on. Special thanks to Kishore Majumdar for bringing the Magic Box along. 

We were all very happy to welcome the latest member of our Anthtak family, Shagun, the beautiful daughter of Pankaj and Pinky, the two month bundle of joy attending her first Anthtak meet. When we bade goodbye around 2 a.m. after a round of chai beyond midnight, we left behind a spirit of happiness along with  loads of wishes for Imtiaz and his family. We truly wish you a happy and contented life of fulfillment in your new home, Imtiaz, Rekha and Khushi.

Ek Shaam Kapoor Khandan Ke Naam - Anth Tak 34

This write up again by Madhu shows how we at Anth Tak enjoy each day of our get together Anth Tak..


As one entered the Mazumdar House, red and silver festoons entwined on the stairway greeted all, to enter the hallway creating an ambience filled with hues of red and white to match the colour code of the evening. Red and white balloons, cream and red curtains and a red backdrop on the wall- not many could guess that the backdrop was created with red chartpapers, against which nestled pictures of the Kapoor clan- all these arranged around the Anthtak collage with the theme for the evening ‘Kal aaj aur Kal’ displayed in red and white set the mood for the evening. Nirmala- your idea of red and white as the colours for the evening made the atmosphere bright and cheerful. Special thanks to Meher and Sowmya for helping out in the decorations with two year old Srinidhi chipping in.

Kishore, Nirmala ne keh diya ki red-white ka code hai, tho hum anthtak sadasya hamesha ki tarah taiyar. Vijay in red kurta and white pyjama, poonam in a bright red salwar, Ram in red Tshirt and white pant, Rama in a lovely white and red pochampalli saree, Ramya in white and red tops and pants, Ramita in red and white top and skirt, Venkat and Priya – the red and white couple with Keerthana and Kaushik not to be left behind, Chandra and Imtiaz in red Tshirts, Nirmala in red with shimmering silver embroidery and Manak Tara- the spirited couple who changed costumes of red and white for every song they sang. Manak actually carried three(?) suits to suit his songs- amazing spirit this couple have, may we cheer them as we read this.

Adding to this ambience was a collage of movie scenes and family pictures of the Kapoors titled- ‘Hai duniya usiki zamaana usi ka’ and another aptly titled collage of Shammi Kappor which displayed ‘Tareef karoon kya uski jisne tumhe banaya’.
And what an evening it was. The evening started with exuberance brimming, as the very first song floated in the air- ‘Mera joota hai japani’- as Chandra crooned away?? or was he miming? This turned out to be not only “Phir bhi dil hai hindustaani , phir bhi dil hai anthtak pyaasi.” Wah Anurag- that was a grand………………………entry indeed. All the way to fly down from Delhi for celebrating our musical moments together was a touching gesture, it made that evening so much more meaningful to each one of us and as Chandra always says “The spirit of Anthtak remains alive forever:” And Anurag you truly showed us that distance in miles is never a barrier in a family. Chandra’s recap of the previous programme at the beginning was a novel idea and he started off the session, television show style, with ‘Hey maine kasam li’ by Ram and Rama.


The ever popular songs like Kajra mohabbatwala by Priya, Tareef karoon by Vijay, Khilte hain by Rama, tum mujhe yun by Ram, Badan pe sitare by Aditya, Chehra hai ya chand khila hai by Rajiv and many more made the evening enjoyable, and we were treated to some very different, not so frequently heard numbers too like Dil ke jharoke mein by Manak, Ek main aur ek tu by Kishore and Praneetha, Tumne mujhe dekha, Saamne ye kaun aaya both by Chandra, Aansoo bhari hai by Vijay , Bachna ai haseeno by Imtiaz and then the dhamakedaar Tara with Milti hai zindagi mein mohabbat kabhi kabhi. Aditya waited for his beautiful partner to sing his number and she very enthusiastically joined him for ‘Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche’- welcome to the family, Jena. Nirmala surprised everyone with her pleasant Telugu number.

The juniors not to be outdone surpassed themselves- Keerthana with aisa lagta hai , Ramya with ek taara, Ramita with Panchchi nadiya, Ramita and the Elvis Presley number ‘I cant help falling in love with you’ , Kaushik with chamak challo , Bharath with Tera hone laga hoon. Way to go, dear kids. Gopi, though tired after a hard day’s classes, came around nine o clock, and we appreciate the enthusiasm.


Khana is an integral part of Anthtak and kudos to Kishore and Nirmala for the delicious spread we had that evening. We started off with singadas ( these are samosas made in the East of India with a different filling which makes the taste heavenly), milk sweets from Andhra and tea as the programme began. Then came in the starters around 7pm. The hare bhare kababs which melted in the mouth and the paneer tikkas disappeared off the platter as soon as they came around along with the fruit punch. (I have taken the recipe of the kabab from the chef, any of you interested in trying out at home?)

Itna saara hum pehle se hi khayenge tho dinner kaise karenge? Do not worry- what better way to shed the kabab and paneer calories than dance. The dance session was electrifying and energetic- everyone got charged up with jalebi bai, sheela ki jawaani, mauja re mauja, - apne manakji is as it is an expert dancer- but what with a charged up atmosphere with laser and disco lights, everyone, even those with two left feet, threw their inhibitions away and danced to glory. Imtiaz- I wish I could dance with you everyday, weight loss is guaranteed. And then when everyone tired themselves out completely, the gastronomical juices were ready to do their job again and we re ready for the next spread.

Dinner on the terrace was a lavish arrangement of pasta salad, vegetable salad, hot sweet corn, phulkas, stuffed parathas, dum aloo, bhindi fry, vegetable jalfrezi, dal tadka, rice, rasam, papad, pickle, curd with rasmalai and kulfi for dessert.
This was followed by a recap of Anthtak silver jubilee moments- a run through of our video for about half an hour where we delightfully laughed together at our fun filled moments of togetherness. Good byes were said but no one seemed to be really moving, some stayed back for a cup of tea at midnight. A white board was strategically placed to write in our thoughts as we made our way out. (This was Kishore’s neighbor Sowmya’s idea) , the board got filled up with colours, words and drawings and there was not space enough to say all that was in our hearts.


We missed Radhika, Akshay, Geethika, Vivek, Ruchi, Chitra, Kishore Panwar, Suchin, Pankaj and Pinky.

That was one wonderful evening Anthtak 34 and as always we wait eagerly for no 35.

Rama adds -

Madhu has been a very integral part of our Anth Tak family, playing a very important role and pitching in wherever there was a need or need for improvement or improvisation. Her penchant, passion and love for Lata songs is arguably the most unparalleled. She for the first time in recent times sang a duet with karaoke with Chandra (Wada karo) which was beautiful. Her help in organizing this meet was acknowledged by Kishore and Nirmala. Madhu you are a jewel in the crown of Anth Tak. Thank you from all of us.

Another person who is growing quietly within our Anth Tak is our own Kirthana. On a short notice, she without any actual practice sang the duet'Jaane jaa' from 'Jawani Deewani' alongwith Chandra which was blemishless. Absolutely a marvel, she is one to watch out for. We, the Anth Tak family wish her the very best in all her endeavours.

Tere Mere Sapne -Anth Tak - 33

Anthtak met at Rams' this Sunday to make dreams come true. We are all dreamers as Rama rightly says for we sing with a passion and zest that people in their mundane practical lives forget to do amidst their routines. Aptly titled ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, the group met to share and sing their dream songs together with the same fervor and enthusiasm as ever. Whoever would say this was Anthtak number 33.

The Rams had gone into a lot of thought on the theme and matched the ambience of the place with it, the members arrived all armed with the right paraphernalia- books, chits of music, CDs, blackberries to google out the lyrics in an instant, the tabla, the guitar, the mixer and of course the jhatkas and matkas The hall had a banner with the Anthtak logo with the day’s theme- ‘Tere Mere Sapne’-‘ Making dreams come true.’ The walls were adorned with Bollywood sapne songs- Mera sundar sapna beet gaya, mere sapnon ki raani kab aayegi tu, kaun hai jo sapno me aaya to name a few. And there were the pictures of the Dream Weavers- some of the greatest names of Bollywood like V Shantaram, Bimal Roy, Nasir Hussain, Subhash Ghai, Satyajit Ray, people who dared to dream and made a difference to the industry.

The session began with a round of about a dozen of sapne songs and then moved on to other numbers.It was indeed apt that as we celebrated on the eve of the 65th year of our Independence , we exactly recorded 65 numbers during this meet. The song list is attached. The difficult part is how many adjectives of praise do we find to describe the performances of that evening.

Chitra’s ‘Tumhe dekhti hoon to lagta hai aise’ was par excellence, kudos to you for the superfluous rendition.

Vijay- aapki deewaaniyon ki list badti jaa rahi hai- ‘Aap yuhin agar aise gaate rahe dekhiye ek din pyar ho jaayega’ ( we are sure you don’t mind if they are the same deewaanis of the anthtak group each time). Your ‘Agar bewafa tujhko’ still reverberates.

Chandra- your foot tapping numbers this time brought everyone onto the dance floor, ‘Mere pairon mein ghungroo’ and ‘Kaan mein jhumka’ were truly wonderful for the energy and the masti it brought in.

Manak- what would we do without you, you are our Jackson, Presley and Shammi all rolled into one. Your dance to the ‘Mere pairon mein ghungroo’ with Dilip kumar style costume will be ever remembered, we admire your spirit and enthusiasm. It is also indeed amazing that as you are singing you are able to dance. You could have been the Kishore Kumar of the 21st century.

Kishore panwar- You were as always at your best, simple yet making your mark.

‘Ek tan hai, ek man hai, ek pran apne, ek rang ek roop, tere mere sapne’ – The words made just for you both Ram and Rama, you have displayed this everytime when we see the ambience you weave together magically for everyone around to enjoy too. Rama, you were at your energetic best in ‘Konjam nilavu konjam neruppu’- no wonder both numbers got once more requests.

Suchin with his’ Chaudvin ka chand’, Ramya with her ‘ Jaane woh kaise log the jinke’, Keerthana with her ‘Aisa lagta hai’, Venkat and Priya with ‘ Dekha maine dekha hai yeh ek sapna’ were a treat to the ears. The numerous English numbers ranging from the ‘Back to December’ by Geetanjali to the ‘Right Now’ by Kaushik to ‘Yesterday once more’ by Vivek proves the immense talent in the group. Rekha, Imtiaz, Kishore, Rajiv and Mr Malani gave us some very entertaining numbers.

Last but not the least, Praveen who stole the show that evening. An upcoming singer in the Telugu film industry, he treated the group with melodious numbers, each surpassing the other- ‘Mundinam paarthene’, ‘Nenjukkul peidhidum maamazhai’, ‘Krishna nee begane baaro’, ‘Varaha nadi karayil’, we could have listened to him and his guitar all night. “ Ek Chatur naar” was astonishingly brilliant, a hit duet by Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey which two people dread to try as a duet rendered with ease like a duet by a solo singer- Praveen, your talent is unparalleled and wish you all the very best in the music industry. You have the added advantage of an excellent partner in Shailaja, not only does she sing extremely well, we could not help but notice the admiration she has for your style as she enjoyed your ‘Deewana hua badal’ and ‘Ek chatur naar’.

Rajeev- Your ‘Roommates’ made most of us feel nostalgic about those days when mess didn’t seem messy and the younger lot of the Anthtak ,of course, saw themselves in your words. Very entertaining.

Sashi sang Musafir Hoon Yaron beginning at the antara.

Krishnan, our Mumbai Talkies expert, he just rattles off reams and scores of information about Bollywood’s actors, actresses, villains, vamps, singers, music directors and lyricists alike. Bollywood doesn’t need an archive, just Mr Krishnan would do ably supported by his wife Hema.

The anchor Chandra as usual did a fine job of including everyone, the singers, the bathroom singers, the non-singers, the children and the elders alike, signifying the underlying spirit and purpose of Anthtak- de-stress and sing with your heart and in our gatherings that one sings is what matters not how best.

The khana is an integral part of Anthtak. The hot chilli bajjis and the bondas served with cups of hot tea, they were irresisistible indeed. Dinner was a huge spread with rotis, alu mutter dry sabji, paneer n capsicum gravy, dal, pulao n raita, rice, rasam, papad and gulabjamoons. You are indeed gracious hosts, Ram and Rama.

The call for the next meet at Kishore Majumdars’ was a fitting finale to Anthtak 33. Adieu till we meet again at Anthtak 34…………………..
